How do I Build a Tree House?

Question from Gary, Indiana

“I really want a treehouse. The only problem is I don’t know how to build one!! It has to be easy enough for a 13 year old to build. Anyone have any ideas on how do I build a tree house? Thanks a ton!”

How do I Build a Tree House?

Since you are building a structure onto a living, moving and un-square foundation, there really is no set way to build a tree house. You just need to jump in with both feet, make a solid treehouse plan and build it. Figure out how to connect it to your tree in a way that’s safe and permanent.

When I built mine, it was low enough that I can see the floor when standing up. This way, if anyone does fall out of the treehouse I built, its not very far. But the building of my awesome tree house is the most fun and the kids will enjoy the helping me build it and you will too.

But since you mentioned you only have a “13 year old’s skills,” it is important to have a good set of basic plans that will show you some basic building skills, plus teach you the proper methods to attach it to the tree.

Since we are dealing with a living foundation, it’s crucial to not damage your tree in any way so your tree house will be around for a very long time. If this is your first time building a treehouse, don’t even start without using a guide. Bar far, the best one I’ve found is a book about how to build playhouses. You get a solid foundation on building and then it shows you how to bring those skills up in a tree.

Good luck with your new tree house and have fun!
